Courtney Miller-Callihan: Critique of a Novel or Nonfiction Proposal

Courtney Miller-Callihan, literary agent at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, Inc., will read and evaluate the opening chapters of one manuscript or nonfiction book proposal (up to 20,000 words) within six weeks of submission. She will write a general evaluation of the manuscript or proposal, with (for fiction) a focus on character, language, and story structure or (for nonfiction) an analysis of the project’s marketability, book structure, and author platform. Line- and copy-editing are not included. Representation is not a guarantee, but not out of the question either.

Courtney is open to editing all genres of fiction and nonfiction, but keep in mind that her list is focused on historical fiction, women’s fiction, and literary fiction; young adult and middle grade novels; and (in nonfiction) science, personal finance, business, pop culture, lifestyle books, and craft books.

Courtney Miller-CallihanCourtney began her career in publishing at Random House, where she spent a number of years in subsidiary rights sales and in contracts before joining Sanford J. Greenburger Associates in 2005. She looks for non-fiction projects on unusual topics, science, personal finance, business, pop culture, lifestyle books, and craft books. In addition, Courtney is seeking new voices in historical fiction, women’s fiction, and literary fiction. Solid credentials are a must. She also represents a limited number of children’s book authors and illustrators. Courtney holds a B.A. in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a M.A. in English from The Johns Hopkins University.

I bid $100. Many people do not know I write non fiction. I even have a book proposal I can dust off and rework titled AFINNITY, which is about my adventures in rediscovering my Finnish heritage. I don’t care who laughs at me, I’m telling you — I have already have a Finnish author platform :)

This auction closes Sunday, March 27.

All auctions for a given week close on Sunday evening beginning 7:00pm CST (8 EST, 6 MST, 5 PST). We will move efficiently, dispassionately and fairly through the auction items one-by-one. Highest bid when we open the auction link wins. We will announce the winning bidder and the back-up bidder; and then we will disable the comment function, which signals the end of the auction.

Our experience in Week Two showed us that it can take up to 45 minutes (for weeks with 30+ auction items) to button everything up. SO: KEEP BIDDING until a winner for your specific auction has been announced. You may wish to clear your cookies/cache before 7:00pm CST so you are sure that your browser is updating with the most recent information. AND AGAIN, as long as the comments are open and no winner has been announced: the auction is still live. All WFTRC decisions regarding the winners are final.

Have gotten some questions about whether Courtney can review something at a later date, when it’s ready:

“I’d be happy to review the proposal or manuscript at a later date, the exact calendar for the review subject to mutual agreement between me and the auction winner.”

Just saw Courtney in NYC this week. You don’t even know what great hands you’ll be in with her. Courtney is amazing.
